There seems to be a universal law in small-town America:
You arrive planning to eat a funnel cake… …and somehow you find yourself on the parking committee.
That, dear friends, is the magic of small towns.
The cartoon above may be a little exaggerated (or maybe not), but it captures something wonderfully true about festivals, carnivals, heritage days, and community celebrations across South Carolina. These events are not merely opportunities to eat fried food and listen to live music.
They are community glue.
They are reunions.
They are homecomings.
They are reminders that towns are more than buildings and roads—they are collections of people who still know how to gather together.
In a world where many of us spend too much time staring at screens, small-town festivals invite us to do something refreshingly old-fashioned:
